Unpleasant thoughts can lead to unpleasant nights

Medical scientists from the University of Oxford completed an interesting study that compares the mental images and thoughts of good sleepers and insomniacs before going to bed. The participants were all asked to record on a handheld device the mental images they had while they were prepping for sleep in their natural home environment. As they recorded these images, they were asked to categorize them as pleasant, unpleasant or neutral.

What were the results? The study showed a significant correlation between good sleepers and positive or pleasant imagery. And the insomniacs? You guessed it – they were riddled with neutral and unpleasant imagery. The researches also added, “The insomnia group experienced more images regarding ‘intimate relationships’ and ‘sleep’ and fewer regarding ‘random/non-connected topics’ compared to the good sleeper group.” The study then went on to compare insomnia with the ever growing ailment of Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD).

Needless to say, this study along with many others has shown that anxiety and negative thoughts can certainly lead to sleepless nights. It might be easier said than done when it comes to pushing these unpleasant thoughts aside, but there are many ways that you can introduce stress relief into your daily routine to help avoid insomnia. These can include meditation, daily excercise (but not before bed!), proper diet, a fun hobby and a solid support system.

Blow off some steam and allow only positive to flow through your mind. Pretty soon you will find yourself in the “good sleeper” category, while leaving your memories of insomnia in the dust.
